The Speaker of the Catalan Parliament, Roger Torrent, has formally put forward the former chairman of the Catalan National Assembly, Jordi Sánchez, as the new candidate for First Minister of Catalonia, following the withdrawal of Carles Puigdemont last week.

Mr. Sánchez was elected along with Mr. Puigdemont at the election on December 21 but is currently in jail on remand near Madrid as part of an investigation into rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds related to the declaration of independence from Spain in October.

A copy of the announcement signed by Mr. Torrent said he had taken the decision after a round of contacts with regional parliamentary representatives.
