A Basque Police officer has died while policing a riot between Spartak Moscow and Athletic de Bilbao fans in the area around the San Mamés stadium in Bilbao on Thursday evening.

Spain's Home Secretary, Juan Ignacio Zoido, confirmed the death of the officer on Twitter and offered his condolences to the man's family and colleagues.

An image published by El Correo showed the officer lying on the ground being attended to by other officers near the stadium.

The Basque newspaper reported the officer was 51 years old.

First media reports suggested the officer had suffering a heart attack during the riot and being rushed to hospital, where doctors were unable to save him.

Later updates suggested the officer might have first received a blow.
