King Felipe made a statement on Tuesday evening on the "very grave" situation in Catalonia on the Spanish Crown's "firm commitment" to Spanish democracy and "understanding and harmony among Spaniards".

He said Spaniards in Catalonia should not worry about Spain's commitment to defend their rights and liberty, and condemned in harsh terms the "irresponsible behaviour" of Catalan authorities, who have "systematically violated legally and legitimately approved rules".

He promised the Spanish state would "ensure constitutional order" in the region.
